"Hwandudaedo" (환두대도) is the Korean term for a traditional Korean sword, often referred to simply as "Hwando" (환도). It's a type of straight, double-edged sword that was widely used during the Goguryeo and Joseon dynasties. The Hwando typically has a slightly curved handle and a straight blade, resembling the Chinese Jian or the Japanese Chokuto.

During the Goguryeo period, the Hwando was primarily used by military officers and elite warriors. Its design evolved over time, incorporating influences from neighboring regions, particularly China. However, during the Joseon dynasty, its use became more ceremonial and symbolic, often associated with high-ranking officials and nobility rather than being used in actual combat.

The Hwando holds significant cultural and historical value in Korea, symbolizing martial prowess, honor, and nobility. While it's not as well-known internationally as Japanese samurai swords like the katana, it remains an important part of Korean martial arts and cultural heritage.
