Almost Clear: three bilateral compositions
Launch price £5 until 31 October, then £7.
Almost Clear is an EP of three pieces of bilateral music. Each track is seven minutes long.
Each has sound that moves rhythmically left to right and is composed to help you settle, focus and reflect.
The album moves from the quietest to the most melodic and rhythmical. Ambient waves first, then piano, then a full string score.
I spent over twenty years as a therapist and in my EMDR and Brainspotting trauma practice I used bilateral music to assist with dual attention and emotion processing.
In 2023 I decided to study an MMus in Music & Sound in order to compose my own bilateral music. I wanted to move beyond a simple bilateral beat and create multipart music, with melodic, harmonic and rhythmical elements. So these are not a simple tone panning left to right. The bilateral structure sets the frame, and the music inside it is composed with care. There are no lyrics, so you are free to write to the sound. Listen to the tracks on their own, or use them as a background 'bed' to write with.
The tracks
- Looking Back (7 min): gentle ambient sound, with waves moving slowly from ear to ear. The quietest of the three, for settling and looking back over what's been.
- Flow (7 min): waves carry the bilateral movement, beneath soft synth and piano. Steady and unhurried, for easing into focus.
- Almost Clear (7 min): a shaker and bowl alternate left and right over an orchestral string score. The most melodic of the three, closer to an instrumental song, for when you're ready to move forward.
Good to know

- Three MP3 downloads (21 minutes in total), plus a zip of all three, for personal listening
- Designed to support reflection and a change of state. Not a treatment, and not a substitute for therapy.
