Japji Sahib is the first sacred composition in the Guru Granth

Sahib, composed by Guru Nanak Dev Ji. It consists of the Mool

Mantar (the root statement of belief), an opening Salok, 38 Pauris

(stanzas), and a closing Slok. It is recited by Sikhs every morning

and is considered the essence of Sikh philosophy.

This book presents each section with its original verse (in Roman

transliteration), a simple explanation in plain English, and a real-

life example — sometimes drawn from the Mahabharat, sometimes

from everyday situations — along with a practical way to apply the

teaching in daily living. In a few select sections, a boxed “Osho’s

Insight” paragraph offers a further, paraphrased reflection drawn

from Osho’s own discourses on Japji Sahib. This is intended as an

accessible companion for reflection, not a substitute for the

original Gurmukhi text or for guidance from a knowledgeable Sikh

scholar or Granthi.

No authentic photograph of Guru Nanak Dev Ji exists, as he lived

centuries before photography. This book’s cover instead uses a

simple mark evoking Ik Onkar — “There is One” — the opening

declaration of Japji Sahib itself, which felt like the most fitting and

respectful image to lead with.
