St Patricks Day Art Lesson Shamrock Art Project Shamrock Art Activity Dot Art
This Shamrock Oil Pastel and Blown Paint Art Project is a St. Patrick's Day lesson built around real art techniques. Students draw a shamrock, apply oil pastel in an impressionist dot style, blend a bold black drop shadow, and finish with a blown watercolor splatter technique that makes the shamrock stand out on the page.
It is a structured, step-by-step elementary mixed media art lesson for grades 2 to 6 that can be scaffolded up or down. Along the way, students work with the Elements of Art (line, shape, texture, value, color and space) and build confidence in drawing, layering and expressive paint techniques.

WHAT STUDENTS LEARN
Students draw a shamrock using heart-shaped leaves, refine their lines with a black felt pen or fine liner, and apply 2 to 3 shades of green oil pastel in an impressionist dot style. They blend black pastel to create a drop shadow for depth, then tilt and blow watered-down paint for drips and splatter texture (steps 11 to 15, pages 20 to 24). The blown paint step introduces controlled experimentation, movement and cause and effect.
HOW TO USE IT
Everything is organized for projection or printing. Use it for March art lessons, St. Patrick's Day units, oil pastel technique lessons, structured sub plans or homeschool art. It usually takes 2 to 3 class periods, depending on drying time, class length, depth of discussion and student pace.
