This St. Patrick's Day Pot of Gold Art Project is a step-by-step directed drawing and mixed media art lesson for elementary students. Students create a bold pot of gold overflowing with coins and topped with a bright six-stripe rainbow.

The lesson blends drawing, painting, coloring and classroom discussion. A black paint pooling technique gives the pot natural watercolor texture, so every piece turns out a little different and ready for display.

They explore watercolor or watered-down tempera to create texture and value in the pot and try color blending in the rainbow.

Concepts covered: line, shape, space, texture, color, value, composition, craftsmanship and creative expression. It suits elementary art classrooms, March and St. Patrick's Day units, sub plans, homeschool art and bulletin board displays.
