Welcome to the Picture Book Atlas!

The Picture Book Atlas is built around a simple rhythm: a science topic, a stack of living picture books, and one meaningful hands-on activity. Each week includes suggested pages from our favorite science spines to help anchor the topic. You’ll see pages referenced here, from Slow Down by Rachel Williams and Nature Anatomy by Julia Rothman, with Insect Anatomy included as an optional addition, but there’s no need to own them all. Use one, use all, or skip the spine altogether and simply enjoy the picture books!

You’ll also find a printable life cycle wheel designed to be used however it works best for your child. Cut and paste the stages into a notebook, invite an older child to label and describe them, let a younger child point and tell you what’s happening, or cut the pieces apart and put the life cycle together like a puzzle. There’s no single “right” way to use it.

I hope this sample gives you a little taste of how simple and rich science can be when you build it around beautiful books.

If you enjoy Butterfly Week, the full Picture Book Atlas includes 30 thoughtfully planned science topics, each with living book recommendations and a meaningful project to bring the learning to life.
