This Artist Statement Workbook and Writing Unit helps students reflect on their artistic practice and write about their own artwork. It is for teachers, art teachers and homeschoolers teaching art reflection, artist statements, art criticism and writing about art, and works especially well for middle school, high school, studio art and portfolio prep.

Students collect ideas while they create, reflect on their influences, identify their message, describe their materials and process, and then build a full artist statement step by step through drafting, revising and peer feedback. Breaking the writing into manageable parts gives students who need structure the prompts and guided practice they need to write with confidence.

WHAT TEACHERS ARE SAYING

★★★★ “This packet was a good guide for teaching my students to write about their artwork. I teach students with learning differences, many of them find words to be very challenging. This resource made the writing process easier for them. It was broken down into manageable steps, and the prompts were helpful for brainstorming. Thanks for the packet.” Jennifer L.

ALL TEACHER REVIEWS

★★★★ “This resource has a lot of options to use in the classroom. I would say I felt that my younger middle schoolers needed more scaffolding for writing than this provided, but this is a great resource with graphic organizers for students with plans. This was great for 8th graders.” Ms M.

★★★ “I used this with my students at the end of the semester when they had a good bit of digital art projects under their belt. Many of them took the class without having made art before so had a difficult time thinking about what they like to make art about etc. I will use this resource again, but I think it would be better to use it at the end of the year when student have a body of work they can think about when writing their statement.” Michelle L.

★★★★ “Wondeful for teaching about artisit statements. Some real artist sample statements would be great visuals to add.” Tara L.

★★★ “useful for assessment” Lynettte Z.

★★★ “I liked taking multiple aspects of these worksheets to help students write artist statements. As an art teacher I was able to use different resources for students with different learning abilities.” Kat H.

★★★★★ “This will be helpful for my students next year - thanks” Jooya T.
