Handwriting And Structure-24 Weeks
Handwriting and Structure: Complete 24-Week Resource
Handwriting and Structure is a complete 24-week instructional resource that integrates handwriting, grammar, sentence construction, reading, and written expression into one consistent five-day routine.
I created this resource after noticing that students who struggled with handwriting often also struggled with grammar, sentence formation, and communicating complete ideas in writing. Instead of teaching these skills in isolation, Handwriting and Structure allows students to practice them together through connected weekly texts and activities.
Three Instructional Units
Weeks 1–8: Fiction
Students trace and copy short fiction texts while learning foundational grammar skills, including nouns, pronouns, verbs, subject-verb agreement, verb tense, and irregular verbs.
Weeks 9–16: Informational Text
Students work with engaging informational topics while learning adjectives, adverbs, prepositions, and prepositional phrases. Each week also includes cumulative grammar review.
Weeks 17–24: Paired Text
Students explore four topics through paired poetry and personal narratives. Grammar instruction advances into punctuation, sentence completeness, conjunctions, contractions, commas, and quotation marks.
The Five-Day Routine
Day 1: Copy the Weekly Text
Students trace and copy a five-part fiction story, informational text, poem, or personal narrative. Each text includes supportive illustrations, primary handwriting lines, a checklist, and a drawing response.
Day 2: Grammar Focus
Students receive explicit instruction in a weekly grammar skill through definitions, examples, identification practice, application activities, and an independent challenge. Beginning in Week 5, each lesson also reviews a previously taught skill.
Day 3: Sentence Surgery
Students organize scrambled words into a complete sentence that embeds the weekly grammar skill. They write the sentence, read it aloud, and use a checklist to revise their work.
Day 4: Structured Writing
Students respond to a prompt connected to the weekly text using four traceable sentence stems. The stems provide support while still allowing students to develop and express their own ideas.
Day 5: Handwriting Assessment
Students complete a four-part weekly assessment:
- Warm-Up Letters
- Tracing Sentence
- Copy the Sentence
- Write Your Own Sentence
A four-level rubric evaluates letter formation, alignment, spacing, legibility, capitalization, punctuation, and sentence completeness.
