Alatau Pullover

Alatau pullover is a top-down round yoke sweater with two neck finishing options: a turtleneck for warmth and a crewneck for comfort. Alatau is a group of mountain ranges in Central Asia. The rich texture, the “ridges” and “valleys” of the chevron pattern reminded me of my hometown in Kazakhstan which is surrounded by these magnificent mountains.

You can knit the matching Alatau Hat and use it as a swatch for this pullover!

Gauge: 21 sts x 24 rounds in 4”/10 cm in ktbl, p1 twisted rib after wet-blocking, using gauge needles

Needles:
  • 16 “/40 cm and 32”/80 cm circular needles and DPNs in size needed to obtain gauge (recommended size is US 6 /4 mm)
  • 16 “/40 cm needle one size larger than gauge needle (for turtleneck option only)
  • 16 “/40 cm needle one size smaller than gauge needle (for crewneck option only)

Notions: Tapestry needle, stitch markers, waste yarn

Construction:
The pullover is knit top-down and in the round. Stitches are cast on provisionally, so you can decide later whether to add a turtleneck or leave it as crewneck. The sweater is worked in a chevron pattern which continues onto the sleeves. The sleeves have a snug fit (0-2” of positive ease), whereas the body features quite a bit of ease (recommended 4-8” of positive ease). You can customize the amount of ease in the body and sleeves.

If you are substituting yarn, the worsted weight may work better than DK, as it is important to have a firm fabric at the given gauge. Choosing a yarn with good stitch definition and memory is also important.

Low Vision Accessibility: This pattern is written in 22-point sans serif font (Arial) in all-black text. It has no italics. All of the directions are fully written out. The charts are also provided in a larger print in black color.
