Five full days of no-prep, substitute-ready middle school English, built for the problem that makes an ELA absence awkward: the person covering your room can read, but cannot teach your unit. Each day is an original nonfiction reading with every answer on the handout, followed by a page that checks its own answers, and a run sheet at the front tells the substitute exactly what to hand out and in what order. The five days cover the middle-school scope — reading literature, reading informational text, vocabulary and word study, grammar and conventions, and writing and revision — so this is a week of coursework rather than a folder of activities. Day 1 carries a short original story inside the reading, so students analyze literature rather than only reading about it. You come back to a complete set of answer keys and a class that kept working.

WHAT'S INCLUDED

- Sub & Teacher Notes run sheet (what to hand out each day, what to print, and why the substitute does not need to grade anything)

- 5 days of student work, two pages per day (67 questions total)

- 5 original nonfiction readings written for this packet, one per day

- 5 complete answer keys, one per day

- Single 17-page PDF: run sheet and student pages first (pages 1-11), an "Answer Keys" divider on page 12, then the keys (pages 13-17) -- print pages 1-11 to hand out the whole week without printing the keys

- PDF bookmarks for one-click navigation by day

- US Letter, low-ink, two-sided printable

WHY A SUBSTITUTE CAN ACTUALLY RUN THIS

- Every question is answered by the reading on the same handout, so a stuck student re-reads the passage instead of asking the sub a subject question

- Every second page checks itself -- answers pair off, spell out a phrase, or fall into a sequence, so a wrong answer is caught by the student, not adjudicated by the sub

- Every day has an "if you finish early" challenge, so nobody runs out of work

- No device, textbook, login, or internet needed

THE 5 DAYS

1. Reading Literature: Plot, Conflict, and Character -- what turns a list of events into a plot, the three shapes conflict takes, character shown rather than announced, and the three parts of an evidence-based answer (14 questions, answer match)

2. Reading Informational Text: Main Idea, Structure, and Purpose -- topic against main idea, stated and implied main ideas, the five common text structures and their signal words, author's purpose, and a reliable order of operations for a text you have never seen (12 questions, sequence path)

3. Vocabulary and Word Study -- the four kinds of context clue, roots, prefixes and suffixes, denotation against connotation, and figurative language including idioms (14 questions, word decoder)

4. Grammar and Conventions -- complete sentences against fragments, run-ons and comma splices, agreement, the five comma jobs, apostrophes, and the words a spellchecker cannot catch (14 questions, answer match)

5. Writing: Paragraphs, Moves, and Revision -- the shape of a paragraph that works, the four parts of an argument, scene against summary in narrative, and why revision and editing are two different jobs (13 questions, word decoder)

Each day stands alone, so they can run in any order or be pulled one at a time.

STANDARDS TOUCHED

CCSS ELA-Literacy, grades 6, 7 and 8. On the Day 1 story — RL.6-8.1 (citing textual evidence for what the text says and for what it implies), RL.6-8.3 (how incidents propel the action and reveal character) and RL.6-8.4 (the meaning of a phrase as it is used in the text, by the vocabulary question that analyses a figure of speech inside the scene). On the informational readings — RI.6-8.1 every single day, since all thirty comprehension questions are answered from the handout in the student's hand, plus RI.6-8.2 (central idea and supporting details) and RI.6-8.5 (text structure) and RI.6-8.6 (author's purpose and point of view) on Day 2. On language — L.6-8.4 by the vocabulary-in-context question that closes every one of the five days and by Day 3's context clues, roots and affixes; L.6-8.5 by Day 3's figurative language and connotation work; L.6-8.1 and L.6-8.2 by Day 4's fragments, run-ons, comma splices, subject-verb and pronoun agreement, comma jobs and apostrophes. On writing — W.6-8.1 at the paragraph level by Day 5's claim, evidence, reasoning and counterclaim work, and W.6-8.5 by Day 5's FIND THE MISTAKE box, which asks the student to diagnose a defective argument paragraph and then rewrite it. Each code is earned by a slot that recurs rather than by a single question. NOT CLAIMED, so you are not buying alignment this packet cannot deliver: RL.6-8.2 (no theme or objective-summary work), RL.6-8.6 (no point-of-view analysis), RI.6-8.8 (the packet builds arguments on Day 5 rather than tracing and evaluating an author's argument in a supplied text), W.6-8.2 and W.6-8.3 (narrative and explanatory moves are taught and analysed, but no day asks a student to produce a full narrative or informative text), and RL/RI.6-8.7 (nothing in the packet is visual or multimedia). No state standards; this sells nationally, and a code the content does not carry is worse than a code left off.
