Big feelings can show up in little bodies in all sorts of ways.

Worry. Anger. Frustration. Excitement. Sadness. Tiredness.

The Children’s Calm Breathing Toolkit has been created by Social Worker Deb Field to give children and the grown-ups supporting them simple, playful ways to slow down, connect with their bodies and practise calming breathing.

There isn't one “right” way to breathe through a big feeling. This toolkit encourages children to explore different strategies and discover which ones feel best for their own body.

Inside you'll find seven child-friendly breathing activities, including:

  • 🫧 Bubble Breathing
  • 🎈 Balloon Breathing
  • 🧸 Teddy Bear Breathing
  • ☕ Hot Chocolate Breathing
  • ✋ Finger Releasing Breathing
  • 🌈 Rainbow Breathing
  • 🌸 Flower and Candle Breathing

Each strategy includes colourful, child-friendly visual prompts alongside simple explanations of what it is, why it helps and how to practise it. Children are also encouraged to notice what is happening in their face, heart, breathing and body as they build greater body awareness.

There's also a dedicated Tips for Grown-Ups page, with gentle reminders about co-regulation, practising together, keeping things simple and supporting rather than trying to “fix” big feelings.

This toolkit may be helpful for:

  • Parents and caregivers
  • Children learning about emotions and regulation
  • Educators and support workers
  • Counsellors and helping professionals
  • Practising calm breathing at home, school or in therapeutic settings

The aim isn't to make big feelings disappear.

It's to help children learn that when feelings get big, they can slow down, breathe, ask for help and keep practising
