37 rediscovered illustrations from an 1890 publication

Little is known today about the Swiss illustrator Albert Wagen (1862–1945).

Yet these delicate compositions reveal an artist capable of transforming birds, flowers, reeds, and coastal landscapes into elegant decorative arrangements. Part natural observation, part visual poetry, they belong to a period when art and natural history still walked hand in hand.

About the visual material

I bought the book at a stall. It was a bit battered and rather moldy. I had a lot of trouble cleaning the illustrations, which immediately struck me for the delicacy of their line. And yes, in some plates, especially the one I chose with the cliff and the seagulls — so modern in concept, you can already sense an art‑deco air. Everywhere you can feel observation, patience, and compositional pleasure.

Here find some enlarged details and a collage of the 37 images.

Each illustration has been carefully restored and prepared in high resolution, preserving the precision of the linework and the elegant complexity.
