Pressure Gradients and Fluid Contacts: A Python Decision Lab

A free introductory course for reservoir engineers, production engineers and geoscientists who want to interpret pressure surveys with greater confidence.

Explore fluid gradients, free water level estimation and uncertainty through a downloadable lesson video, equation reference and hands-on Python exercises using original synthetic datasets.

Is This Course for You?

This course is for reservoir engineers, production engineers and geoscientists who want to strengthen their interpretation of pressure gradients and fluid contacts.

You need basic algebra and petroleum terminology. Some familiarity with Python is helpful, but installation and running instructions are included.

You will practise checking pressure references, estimating contacts and explaining the assumptions and uncertainty behind your results.

What You Will Practise

Check gauge and absolute pressure, depth datum and reference fluid before interpreting a survey.

Fit oil, gas and water observations separately. Estimate a conditional free water level, distinguish it from a saturation-based oil-water contact and explore how pressure offsets affect the calculation.

Run the ANVIL-1 Python practice lab, then apply the method independently to the new COBALT-2 assessment case.

The emphasis is on reproducible calculations and defensible interpretation, not just obtaining a numerical answer. These synthetic exercises are educational, not drilling or operating instructions.
