How do the people get ready for what comes next? Join Eli, Maya and Mum as they read Joshua’s instructions to the camp. Joshua tells the officers to carry a message through the people: prepare food, because within three days they are to cross the River Jordan to receive the land God is giving them.

Joshua also speaks to Reuben, Gad and half the tribe of Manasseh. Their families and animals will remain in the land Moses gave them east of the river, while their fighting men are to go ahead and help the other Israelites. Joshua describes when the men may return. The response includes a wish for God to be with Joshua and words encouraging him to be strong and courageous.

Original-series-style illustrations accompany this selected retelling. No battle or weapon is pictured, and the river crossing has not happened yet. Separate fictional garden scenes show Maya and Eli choosing little packing jobs with Mum before a family walk. They can ask questions and get help as they prepare together.

READING TOGETHER

Preview this selected retelling. It names fighting men because some instructions concern military support in a conquest setting. No battle, weapon or death scene is illustrated. Grown-up notes explain that other peoples already inhabit the land. Only the encouragement at the end of verse 18 is included in the child narrative; its threat of death for disobedience is omitted and identified in the grown-up notes. This book does not retell the entire passage.

Joshua’s authority in this account is not presented as a rule that children must obey any adult without question. Encourage children to ask when something is unclear, uncomfortable or unsafe, and to tell a trusted grown-up. The modern family outing is a separate fictional story, not an equivalent to Israel’s military instructions or an endorsement of warfare.

Children can speak, point, draw, use communication aids or simply listen. Prayer and activities are invitations, not requirements. Activities use paper and suitable crayons with a grown-up. A caring adult should choose any real outing, route, supplies and safe jobs, and check preparations before setting off.

Modern scenes are fictional; ancient settings and the characters’ appearance are imaginative. AI-assisted illustrations selected and reviewed for this edition.
