Can you find the missing piece?
Your students know more vocabulary than they actually USE.
Give them a definition? They know the word.
Show it in the textbook? They recognize it.
But ask them to make a connection on their own… and suddenly they’re stuck. 👀
THE MISSING PIECE turns vocabulary retrieval into a quick, visual brain challenge.
Students see three clues and have to find the ONE missing word that works with all three.
For example:
CUP + ___
PAN + ___
CHEESE + ___
Can they spot it?
CAKE!
→ cupcake
→ pancake
→ cheesecake
Sounds easy? It doesn’t stay that way. 😏
The challenges gradually become more difficult — and the missing piece won’t always come at the end. Sometimes students will need to work backwards and find the word that comes BEFORE all three clues.
That means they’re not simply recalling vocabulary. They’re spotting patterns, making connections, retrieving words and thinking about how English words are built.
