History of Computers: all 20 printable lessons (Package of 20), ages 11-14
A full term of computing history for ages 11 to 14, ready to teach. 20 printable lessons that follow 20 free videos step by step, from beads and pebbles on a counting board to AI on your own desk.
Try it before you buy: every video is free (see kitson-workshop.pages.dev/history), and Lesson 1 (the abacus) is a free download. Every other lesson works the same way.
Watch a part. Pause. Talk. Try it. Then press play again.
What you get: 20 printable PDF lessons, one for each episode. Every lesson has:
- A one-page guide for the grown-up, with the exact times to pause the video
- Key words, and a "think first" question
- Pupil pages for each part of the video: what we just heard, questions to talk about, and something to try
- Worksheets, the story in pictures, and a quiz
- All the answers, teaching notes, and the sources for every fact
The story: the Antikythera mechanism, Babbage and Ada Lovelace, punched cards, Turing and the codebreakers, ENIAC, the transistor and the chip, IBM System/360, UNIX, the microprocessor, home computers, the IBM PC, windows and the mouse, ARPANET and the Web, phones, the GPU, the cloud, machine learning, large language models and AI on a desk.
Time and materials: about 45 minutes per lesson, so roughly a full term at one lesson a week. Pencils and dried beans or counters; later lessons add scissors for cut-outs. Pupils don't need computers: you only need a way to play the video to the group.
Price: bought one by one, lessons 2 to 20 cost $152 (lesson 1 is free). The package is $129, and code SAVE10 takes a further 10% off ($116.10).
A good fit if you teach ages 11 to 14 (it works from 9 with help), homeschool, or run a computing club, and want a ready unit with answers and sources.
Not the right fit if you want a course pupils work through alone (these are lessons a grown-up leads), or you need one copy for a whole school (one purchase covers one teacher or one family).
