About Giger

H.R. Giger was born on February 5, 1940, in Chur, Switzerland, and passed away on May 12, 2014, in Zurich, Switzerland.

Giger is most famous for his design work on the 1979 science fiction horror film "Alien." He won an Academy Award for Best Visual Effects for his work on the film.

Giger's artistic style was heavily influenced by his fascination with death and the macabre. His work often features biomechanical elements, humanoids with elongated limbs, and disturbingly organic forms.

In addition to his visual art, Giger also designed furniture, jewelry, and sculptures. He even created a bar in Switzerland called the H.R. Giger Bar, which features his signature biomechanical design elements throughout.

Giger was a self-taught artist, and he began drawing and painting at a young age. He started exploring the themes of sex, death, and the macabre in his art during his teenage years.

Giger's art has been the subject of numerous exhibitions around the world, including retrospectives at the H.R. Giger Museum in Gruyeres, Switzerland, and the Museum of Arts and Design in New York City.

Giger was an accomplished musician and played keyboards for a band called "The Spacecraft." He also created album covers and stage designs for musicians such as Emerson, Lake & Palmer, and Debbie Harry.

Giger's work has been highly influential in the fields of science fiction, horror, and industrial music. He has inspired numerous filmmakers, artists, and musicians, including Ridley Scott, Alejandro Jodorowsky, Trent Reznor, and Tool.

Giger suffered from night terrors and often incorporated his vivid nightmares into his art. He once said, "My paintings seem to make the strongest impression on people who are, well, who are crazy."

Giger was an avid collector of skulls and bones, and his personal collection of human and animal remains can be seen in the H.R. Giger Museum.
