Poddy Dodging (The Man Who Smiles)
Poddy Dodging (The Man Who Smiles)
By Luke Pike
In the flooded cattle country along the Northern Territory–Queensland border, rumours travel faster than horses. Cattle vanish without a trace. Brands are altered. Tracks appear where no rider should survive the Wet.
At the centre of it all is one man.
They call him Smiley — a stockman who knows the land, the rivers, and the law’s blind spots better than anyone. To some, he’s a criminal. To others, he’s a survivor playing a game older than fences and paperwork.
When a determined police patrol sets out to stop him, the chase becomes more than a hunt for stolen cattle. It becomes a battle of wits across floodplains, border politics, and the harsh realities of Territory life — where the line between right and wrong is often drawn in mud.
In a world of shifting loyalties, war-time pressure, and country that answers to no man, one question remains:
Is Smiley stealing cattle… or taking back something that was never truly lost?
