There's a week in late September when most of the garden has quietly given up, and two things carry on as if nobody told them. Chrysanthemums and asters. This set is those two.

What makes them worth painting isn't their colour — it's their shape. Chrysanthemums have more petal architecture than almost any flower going, and there's one of each kind here so you can feel the difference under your brush: a huge incurved exhibition bloom whose petals curl over the crown until the centre disappears, a spider chrysanthemum drawn out into long thread-fine curling tubes, a pompon built like a honeycomb globe, a tight little button, an anemone-centred bloom with a raised cushion in the middle.

The asters do the opposite thing — they get their beauty from quantity. Clouds of tiny starry daisies on branching wiry stems, low mounds smothered so thickly you can barely see a leaf, long arching sprays strung with little stars end to end.

Every template is a soft-pencil outline on A4 portrait — print it on watercolour paper, sit down with a brush, and let the colour do the thinking.
