Greatness Needs a Ride Home

They rocked the room.

The van declined to participate.

Greatness Needs a Ride Home is a big-hearted comedy-rock song about two musicians who give the night everything they have—then discover that greatness cannot start the van.

“Our faces were on the poster.

Nobody recognized us pushing.”

There’s an emergency box full of smoke-machine fluid. Two hundred feet of the wrong cable. Enough confidence to shake the walls, and one increasingly important phone call.

Then somebody picks up.

She’s just finished work. Her coffee is cold. The heater is on. And somewhere between telling her about the show and asking about her night, the evening gets a little bigger than the stage.

“We can sing to a thousand strangers,

But tonight we’re ridin’ with you!”

Rock-and-roll swagger, practical difficulties, and affection for the people who come through when the lights go down.

Two kings in a loading zone.

One very important phone call.
