337 more entries transcribed name by name from the National Archives' own scans — Roll 12, images 361–480, the inward manifests of 1849. 334 named, 3 unnamed, on 58 manifests: a quieter stretch of the roll — small Texas, Florida and Charleston packets running from spring into fall.
Three packets close across this book's edges: the Henry A Barling's certificate at image 391 agrees "14 in number" with her table at image 390; Sam of the Jeff Davis gets his certificate at 421; and the Yacht's certificate at 451 closes Martin and Harriett's table at 450 — with its number left blank, as Galveston collectors in this stretch so often do.
One girl in this book was never there at all: Rashealt, 14, alone on the steamship Yacht's Galveston manifest, endorsed at New Orleans "Not found on Board." Also inside: the barque Bachelor's 83 numbered lines against the boarding officer's "82 in number all told" — one person unaccounted for; David, 26, of the schooner American, whom the inspector boarded twice on the night of July 4th without finding, then "since found the Boy"; Lucy's infant and Hannah's child, rowed unnamed because their certificates count them; Phoebe, 73, crossing with two small children; Tobitha, 13, alone from Brazos Santiago, her shipper resident in Marietta, Ohio; and a boy of seven whose only name is the clerk's ditto mark — "do."
Every name is transcribed by hand from the original manifests. Where a manifest and its certificate disagree, both readings are printed — nothing is guessed, and nobody is tidied away.
