Ever since the avant-garde composer John Cage invented prepared piano by inserting screws and various objects onto the piano strings, guitarists have been experimenting with the similar procedure transposed onto the guitar strings and body. In his 3 de masitas preparadas, the Danish/Mexican composer and guitarist Santiago Gutiérrez Bolio has used highly unusual and evocative timbres while basing the composition on very lively, quasi-improvised polyrhythmic structures.
