Carmen at the Window: A Quiet Year of Looking Out
A gentler book. This one is about the window.
For a year, Carmen and Nappi watch the world through glass. Birds arrive in March and vanish in October. Snow makes fur on the pane. Rain, which Nappi has decided means the outside is broken, arrives and stays. A neighbour's child waves at the tank every single morning on the way to school and never once gets a wave back, and minds not at all.
There are fewer punchlines here and more long looks. Nappi names the birds. Carmen refuses to admit she has learned the names. Aino photographs them side by side, one furred and one scaled, both facing the same square of light, and puts the picture on the wall, where Veikko looks at it more often than anyone.
A hundred strips and six Sunday pages about two animals who cannot go outside and have made peace with it, slowly, in each other's company.
