Five full days of substitute-ready computer science in one no-prep download, and not a single page of it needs a device. A computer science absence is harder to cover than most, because the person in your room almost certainly cannot teach the content and definitely cannot troubleshoot a cart of Chromebooks, a district login or a broken build. Each day is an original nonfiction reading with every answer on the handout, followed by a page that checks its own answers, and a run sheet at the front tells the substitute exactly what to hand out and what to print. The five days cover how computers work, algorithms and computational thinking, programming concepts traced by hand, the internet and data, and digital citizenship, AI and careers — a week of coursework rather than a folder of time-fillers. That is about $2.59 a day, and you come back to a complete set of answer keys and a class that kept working.

WHAT'S INCLUDED

- Sub & Teacher Notes run sheet (what to hand out each day, what to print, and why the substitute does not need to grade anything)

- 5 days of student work, two pages per day (65 questions total)

- 5 original nonfiction readings written for this packet, one per day

- 5 complete answer keys, one per day

- Single 17-page PDF: run sheet and student pages first (pages 1-11), an "Answer Keys" divider on page 12, then the keys (pages 13-17) -- print pages 1-11 to hand out the whole week without printing the keys

- PDF bookmarks for one-click navigation by day

- US Letter, low-ink, two-sided printable

WHY A SUBSTITUTE CAN ACTUALLY RUN THIS

- Every question is answered by the reading on the same handout, so a stuck student re-reads the passage instead of asking the sub a subject question

- Every second page checks itself -- answers pair off, spell out a phrase, or fall into a sequence, so a wrong answer is caught by the student, not adjudicated by the sub

- Every day has an "if you finish early" challenge, so nobody runs out of work

- No device, textbook, login, or internet needed

THE 5 DAYS

1. How Computers Work -- hardware and software, binary, the processor, and memory versus storage (12 questions, sequence path)

2. Algorithms and Computational Thinking -- decomposition, pattern-finding, abstraction, pseudocode and debugging on paper (13 questions, word decoder)

3. Programming Concepts Unplugged -- variables, conditionals, loops and functions, traced by hand on paper (14 questions, answer match)

4. The Internet and Data -- networks, addresses, packets, encryption, and where uploaded data actually lives (13 questions, sequence path)

5. Digital Citizenship, AI and Careers -- privacy, checking a claim, how AI systems learn, bias, and the routes into the field (13 questions, word decoder)

Each day stands alone, so they can run in any order or be pulled one at a time.

PERFECT FOR

- Emergency and planned substitute days in Computer Science (grades 6-12)

- Planned absences, professional development days, and testing weeks when you are pulled to proctor

- Review before a test, the first week of school, or the day before a break

- Homeschool families working through Computer Science

STANDARDS TOUCHED

Computer science content across hardware, algorithms, programming concepts, networks and digital citizenship — five original readings, stated in plain language because that is the honest way to state it. CCSS ELA/Literacy for science and technical subjects: RST.6-8.1, RST.6-8.4, RST.9-10.1, RST.9-10.2 and RST.9-10.4, earned by the comprehension questions and the daily vocabulary-in- context item. NO CSTA CODES ARE CLAIMED — the content maps cleanly onto several CSTA strands and naming them would be easy, but that numbering is not in our verified toolkit, and an invented code on a live listing is worse than no code at all. Nothing is listed that the content does not actually do.
