Exercise Your Clinical Reasoning
FREE MODULE 1
An introduction to a course to develop your clinical reasoning skills
An introduction to a course to develop your clinical reasoning skills
During your career as a healthcare practitioner, it is common to focus your further education on knowledge building related to specific health conditions, with the parallel development of clinical skills. While knowledge and skill development are fundamental aspects, they are only part of the progression of your clinical career.
Developing clinical reasoning is another key element of professional development for any healthcare practitioner. However, it is much less common to spend dedicated time on developing clinical reasoning skills. It is a misconception that experience alone evolves your clinical reasoning. Exercise Your Clinical Reasoning provides clear guidance on strategies to help you consciously develop your clinical reasoning skills.
A traditional understanding of the clinical reasoning revolves around the concept of cognitive processes that healthcare professionals use to analyze and interpret clinical data, make a diagnosis, and develop a management plan for a person’s clinical condition. Clinical reasoning is an iterative process that involves generating hypotheses, gathering data to support or refute them, and adjusting the hypotheses and management plan as new information becomes available.
While the clinical condition element of clinical reasoning underpins good clinical practice, it does not explicitly embrace a contemporary biopsychosocial understanding of pain in terms of considering the person element of clinical reasoning (see Figure 2 below). This is where, in our experience, we feel clinicians often stall in their progression towards becoming an ‘ideal clinician’. The ability to understand a problem from the person’s perspective, to think critically, problem-solve, and communicate effectively with patients, their significant others, and other members of the healthcare team are all key components of contemporary clinical practice. This course is designed to increase your understanding of the person AND the condition elements, and develop clinical your reasoning processes associated with this.
This course has been designed for healthcare practitioners who are involved with managing people with musculoskeletal conditions. We are physiotherapists, so naturally there is a physiotherapy focus to the content. But overall, the content in Exercise Your Clinical Reasoning is relevant to any healthcare practitioner working in the musculoskeletal field.
Exercise Your Clinical Reasoning is for people at any stage of their career. This could mean having any level of experience or any level of training. But, how you interact with it and what you get out of it will differ over time.
