The Cask of Amontillado

The short novel is a tale of revenge. Montresor, the narrator who "wowed revenge" about "the thousand injuries of Fortunato" depicts his own actions. 

He develops the perfect plan of retribution. "I must not only punish, but punish with impunity." Irony, both dramatic and verbal, plays an important role in the tale. Dramatic irony: the reader becomes aware of what will become of Fortunato (whose name is ironic by itself), and verbal irony: most Montresor's words

say one thing and mean something else.

Montresor realizes his family motto: "Nemo me impune lacessit."(No one assails me with impunity.)
