About Bandon Beach, Oregon Coast

Bandon’s Sea Rocks on the Oregon Coast are some of the most iconic natural landmarks in the Pacific Northwest, famous for their dramatic shapes, cultural legends, and rich wildlife.

🌊 Geological Origins

  • The sea stacks are remnants of ancient geological material formed millions of years ago through subduction, where tectonic plates collided and pushed up resistant rock.
  • Over time, wind, waves, and weather eroded softer material, leaving behind the striking pinnacles and formations we see today.

🪨 Iconic Rock Formations

  • Face Rock – Central to a Coquille tribal legend about Princess Ewauna, who turned her gaze skyward to escape the ocean spirit Seatka.
  • Elephant Rock – Resembles an elephant’s head, complete with “ears” formed by sea caves.
  • Wizard’s Hat – A sharply pointed stack that looks like a tall hat rising from the surf.
  • Table Rock – Flat-topped, resembling a giant stone table.
  • Cat and Kittens Rocks – Smaller formations tied to the Face Rock legend.

🐦 Wildlife & Ecology

  • The rocks are part of the Oregon Islands National Wildlife Refuge, hosting seabirds like puffins, cormorants, and gulls.
  • Tide pools around the formations teem with starfish, anemones, mussels, and crabs.
  • Seasonal closures protect nesting snowy plovers south of Face Rock from March to September.
