Are your middle school students zoning out during SEL lessons, but suddenly fully engaged when a game is involved?

Say It Without Saying It is a high-energy SEL guessing game designed specifically for grades 5–9 to build communication skills, emotional regulation, perspective-taking, and teamwork — all without worksheets, lectures, or extra prep.

Students rotate through three interactive rounds that challenge them to explain, act out, or give limited clues while following specific communication rules. The result?

✔ Real discussion

✔ Laughter and connection

✔ Meaningful practice of social skills middle schoolers actually need

Perfect for school counselors, advisory periods, SEL blocks, small groups, classroom community building, and sub plans.

WHAT STUDENTS PRACTICE

Through play, students naturally practice:

  • Clear communication
  • Turn-taking and listening
  • Managing frustration and excitement
  • Flexibility and impulse control
  • Working collaboratively with peers
  • Handling winning and losing appropriately

This activity works because middle schoolers learn best from each other, not from another slide deck.

HOW THE GAME WORKS

Students play in small teams and rotate through three rounds:

  • Describe It – explain the word using sentences (no acting)
  • Act It Out – communicate using actions only (no talking)
  • One-Word Clue – give a single word to guide your team

Each word card includes restricted (“forbidden”) clue words, increasing challenge and encouraging flexible thinking.
