This is a fictional story with fictional characters; however, it does not diminish the reality that thousands of young men were drafted into a senseless war far removed from American soil.

Many Americans opposed the war because of its devastation and violence.

In the opinion of others, the conflict was a war against Vietnamese independence or intervention in a foreign civil war; others opposed it since it lacked a clear objective and seemed unwinnable.

"They inducted me into the United States Marine Corps when I was eighteen.

The Marines were allowed to draft back then, and as luck would have it, they chose me.

I initially felt cheated and didn't understand why I had to leave.

The people around me stayed home and went about their lives as usual.

I graduated from high school in May 1967.

Whenever I think back to that calm springtime evening, I remember the feeling of freedom I experienced.

As I watched dozens of dark blue caps adorned with golden tassels soaring into the night sky and bouncing to the ground, exploding into thousands of pieces of hot metal, I was back in the "Nam."

That time morph has haunted me for decades.

The memories of flickering stars and my high school band playing ''pomp and circumstance'' have long since faded."
