Staircase Shawl Pattern by Emma Vining
The Staircase Shawl is inspired by one of the many stunning staircases in the National Museum of Scotland, Edinburgh. Made from three mini-skeins and one full skein of John Arbon Textiles Knit By Numbers yarn in a tonal colour gradient, the Staircase Shawl begins with the casting on of a single stitch in the lightest shade of yarn. Stitches are increased on every right-side row until the scarf’s full width is reached. The shawl then continues without increases. A pattern of textured triangles runs along the inside edge of the shawl. These triangles are offset with textured bands of stocking stitch and reverse stocking stitch that are bordered by sections of short-row shaping. As well as forming a decorative eyelet pattern, the short-row shaping creates a gentle curve.
