1. The Vampire Lovers
The Vampire Lovers
This is the first film in Hammer’s Karnstein Trilogy and one of their most acclaimed horror movies. The story is set in 19th-century Styria (Austria). A mysterious and beautiful young woman named Carmilla (Ingrid Pitt) arrives at the estate of a wealthy widower, Mr. Morton, after a carriage “accident.”
She is taken in as a guest and quickly becomes close to Morton’s innocent daughter, Laura. Carmilla is actually the ancient vampire Mircalla Karnstein, who uses her seductive powers to prey on young women. She begins a passionate, erotic relationship with Laura while slowly draining her life force through nightly visits. As Laura grows weaker and starts having nightmares, strange deaths and illnesses spread among the local women.
General Spielsdorf (Peter Cushing), whose own daughter was previously killed by Carmilla, begins investigating the Karnstein family legend. He teams up with Laura’s father to hunt down what he suspects is a vampire. The film builds to a climax as the men race to stop Carmilla before she claims more victims and fully awakens the Karnstein vampire bloodline.
