Sometimes you need to come at things sideways. So, while you ponder the wonders and knotty problems of the world, soothe and divert your mind with a simple hat (without, we hope) too many knotty problems at all.

Hat is knit bottom up in the round.

Pattern contains
Charts and written instructions for main pattern and crown decreases. Links to tutorials for suggested cast on bind off etc.

Sizes:
Choose a size approx. 10cm (4 in) less than your actual head size for a snug fit. Be sure to measure from the top of your crown to the base of your ear to check required length and work additional rows if required.

Finished sizes:
Finished circumferences and lengths:
Age 6-12months: 36cm/14 in circumference and 20cm/7 ¾ inches long
Age 18 months-4 years: 38cm/15 in circumference and 23cm/ 9 inches long
4 years-Adult S: 42 cm/16 ½ in circumference and 27cm/10 ½ inches long
Adult M: 44cm/17 ¼ in circumference and 28cm/11 inches long

Gauge & needles:
20 stitches and 26 rounds over 10cm/4 in over the main pattern stitch. 5mm/US 8 needles or correct needles to obtain gauge.

Knitting in the round
decreasing
slipping stitches

Yarn and yardage
Two contrasting aran weight yarns. I used West Yorkshire Spinners The Croft, Shetland Colours.
Colour A: Tresta (purple) and Colour B: Clousta (multi-coloured speckled yarn).

One skein of each yarn is required for all sizes or approx:

Age 6-12months: Metres A: 45 B: 20/ Yards A: 50 B: 22
Age 18 months-4 years: Metres A: 56 B: 24/ Yards A: 61 B: 27
4 years-Adult S: Metres A: 78 B: 30/ Yards A: 71 B: 34
