In 1866 Congress opened the peacetime Army to Black men, and the Ninth Cavalry rode into West Texas. Isaiah Freeman, born enslaved in Mississippi, rides with them, and Ruth begins writing the names of the dead into the front of her Bible. This guide helps your group talk about both.

Inside:

• The true story in brief, with a References page of sources
• Discussion questions for each of the book’s four parts, plus questions for the whole book
• Record and Invention: what is documented history and what the novelist made up
• A 15-minute group activity, “The Two Books,” and a page for your own notes
• A two-page printable worksheet with room to write
• What happened next, and where to keep reading
