Hortulus Fingerless Mitts & Ear Warmer · Knitting Pattern (PDF, Beta)
A little garden to wear. Hortulus is Latin for "little garden", and this set is one: fingerless mitts with a beetle whose whole body is a lilac flower, and an ear warmer tied under the chin, with a rabbit sitting over each ear. Both are knitted in two-colour stranded colourwork and share the same border of lilac florets.
BETA PATTERN
Every chart, stitch count, increase and float has been checked stitch by stitch in software, but no sample has been knitted yet. You get the beta at a lower price, and the tested version will reach you for free through your Payhip download link. Please knit the swatch, try the cuff and the mitt on as you go, and write to me if anything doesn't add up.
WHAT YOU GET
• 2 PDFs, in English and Polish, each with the mitts and the ear warmer
• 8 colour charts: the beetle, the palm, the thumb gusset, the border, both rabbits, the back of the ear warmer and the top of the head
• Dots on the charts that show where to catch every long float
• Step-by-step instructions, sizes, schematics and a yarn estimate
• Try-on points for the cuff and the mitt, and a diagram for grafting the ear warmer in the round
THE MITTS
Sizes S / M / L, 17.8 / 20 / 22.2 cm around, for a hand of about 17–18.5 / 19–20.5 / 21–22.5 cm around the knuckles; about 16.5 cm long. Worked in the round from a two-colour rib, with a thumb gusset on the palm side. The beetle sits on the back of the hand, tiny florets cover the palm.
THE EAR WARMER
One size: about 10 cm wide over the ears and 15 cm on the top of the head. Its length over the head can be adjusted, from 48.5 to 57.5 cm tip to tip (51.5 cm as written), so the rabbits sit over your ears; plus two 30 cm i-cord ties. It is a flat tube, so it is double and the floats stay hidden inside. You knit two halves from the ties up and graft them at the top of the head, so both rabbits sit upright and look forward.
MATERIALS
• Woolly fingering (jumper weight), about 200 m per 50 g, in two contrasting colours. The whole set: 2 balls of the main colour and 1 ball of the contrast colour.
• 2.25 mm needles for small circumferences
• Gauge: 36 sts × 40 rounds = 10 cm in stranded colourwork, blocked
SKILL LEVEL
Intermediate: two colours in every round, a thumb gusset, grafting.
