JUDGING – Restore the Judges As At the First by Bro H
“Teach me good judgment and knowledge, For I believe in Your commandments.” [Verse 1] The one who lives on milk remains Unskilled in righteousness; But those matured through faithful use Discern both good and evil. The spiritual man examines All the things that stand before him; He proves what is acceptable And holds what has been proven good. A people trained to make no judgment Cannot guard the truth or nation; Refusing to distinguish darkness Is not mercy, love, or patience. [Chorus] Restore the judges as at first, The counselors as at the beginning; Let truth rise again within the street, Let judgment stand within the gate. Teach Israel good judgment and knowledge By the law that she called strange; Let mercy walk beside the truth, And righteous judgment live again. [Verse 2] Noah heard of things not yet seen; No flood had touched the ground. He believed the warning Yahweh gave And moved with fear to build. Each board he fitted to the ark Declared the Word was true; Each day of faithful preparation Judged the world that would not move. He did not condemn through boasting Or imagine himself better; He obeyed while others mocked, And saved his household through the water. [Verse 3] Nineveh heard Jonah’s warning, Turned from evil, and repented; Their repentance judged the generation That heard One greater and hardened. From the south the queen came seeking For the wisdom of King Solomon; Her long journey judged the hearers Who rejected Wisdom standing near. Law-keeping uncircumcision— Scattered Israel among the nations— Judged the circumcision boasting In the letter while transgressing. Righteous conduct bears a witness; Light exposes what is hidden. Faith that moves beneath the Word Judges unbelief by living. [Verse 4] At Corinth brother sued his brother Before the courts of the unjust; Paul did not speak of courts in heaven, But of matters in this life. The saints shall judge the world; They shall judge its messengers. They must therefore learn to judge The smallest causes among brethren. The sons of God are living now, Covenant heirs upon the earth; Called to defend the poor and needy, And judge with wisdom, law, and truth. [Verse 5] Moses heard the causes brought him And made known the laws of God; Able men who hated covetousness Bore the smaller matters with him. Solomon asked for understanding To discern the good from evil; Jehoshaphat charged every judge: “You judge for Yahweh, not for man.” Ezra chose those who knew the law And commanded them to teach it; Judgment never stood apart From knowing what the law required. When Yahweh raised the judges, They delivered Israel from oppression; When the people turned to idols, They returned again to bondage. [Bridge] Speak truth to one another. Execute the judgment Of truth and peace within your gates. Show mercy and compassion, Every man toward his brother. Hate the evil. Love the good. Establish judgment in the gate. [Verse 6] Israel cried, “Our God, we know You,” While she cast away the good; Silver idols filled the nation, And the law was counted strange. Truth fell down within the street; Whoever turned from evil became prey. The law was weakened; wrong judgment ruled, The wicked surrounded the righteous. The enemy was not the first cause; Israel’s rebellion brought the curse. When a covenant people will not judge, Evil takes possession of the land. Judgment must begin among us— Doctrine, worship, public conduct; Learn the law, amend our ways, And execute true judgment. [Final Chorus] Restore the judges as at first, The counselors as at the beginning; Let truth rise again within the street, Let judgment stand within the gate. Teach Israel good judgment and knowledge By the law that she called strange; Let mercy walk beside the truth, And righteous judgment live again. [Outro] Let Your people again discern Between the righteous and the wicked, Between the one who serves You And the one who serves You not. “Teach me good judgment and knowledge, For I believe in Your commandments.”
