Designing Wall Moulding That Fits Your Home | A Planning Guide for Hallways and Staircases
If you've been staring at your stairway wall trying to figure out where to start with wall moulding, you're not alone. I've been exactly where you are.
This guide walks you through the planning and layout process from the beginning. Helping you get clear on what you want, how to study what you're drawn to and why, and figuring out how to apply that to your specific walls. Including the tricky spots nobody warns you about.
What's inside:
- Design and planning phase: how to get clear on what you want and find a layout direction you feel good about
- How to think through your specific walls, including existing features like door casings, baseboards, and stair angles
- Tricky situations and obstacles from our own project, with photos throughout
- Tools and materials overview
- Resources for calculating angle cuts on stairway boxes
- Planning worksheet with prompts and space to capture measurements, layout decisions, and notes
Is this guide right for you?
This is for you if you're planning a wall moulding project in a hallway or stairway and feel stuck on the planning and layout process. The examples and photos are specific to a hallway and stairway project, though the principles apply to any room.
This guide walks you through a thinking process, not a decision tree. I'm not going to tell you which design to choose. I'm going to help you figure out what you're drawn to, how to test it in your space, and how to work through the challenges specific to your walls.
A few things to know before you buy:
This guide does not include step by step cutting tutorials or detailed photos of every cut we made. It focuses specifically on picture frame box moulding. The planning and design principles apply broadly, but the installation section including the angle calculations is specific to box moulding in a hallway and stairway. For the angle calculations on the stairway boxes I share the formula we used and direct you to a YouTube resource that shows the process visually far better than I could in a guide.
This guide is best suited for someone who wants a framework and a thinking process, with the benefit of someone who has already been through it, rather than a prescriptive layout formula.
