A message. A king. A choice.

How can we listen with care and treat people fairly?

Moses and Aaron ask Pharaoh to let God’s people go. The king refuses and makes the workers’ lives harder. Through selected events from Exodus 5–10, this gentle retelling explores a difficult Bible account of slavery, plagues and a promise of freedom. It ends before the final plague, Passover and the departure from Egypt.

At home, Eli is so busy arranging a toy farm that he misses Maya’s idea. With Mum’s help, he practises pausing, listening and making room for someone else.

Moses and the King Who Would Not Listen is Book 17 in Little Bible Explorers by Steve Lewis: an original, simplified Bible story for ages 3–8, written for reading with a grown-up.

READING INFORMATION

The PDF preserves the square 8 × 8 inch layout. Its text can be selected and searched. The EPUB requires a reader supporting EPUB 3 fixed-layout books; its text does not reflow or resize independently of the pictures. Complete page text is included in image descriptions, and the contents links to every page. Tablets, computers and colour e-readers are best suited to these illustrated editions.

WHO IS IT FOR?

Children aged 3–8, with parents, carers or teachers. Use for family Bible time, home learning or Sunday school. Younger children can explore the pictures; older children can discuss the questions and read the selected Bible passages with an adult.

A NOTE FOR GROWN-UPS

Please read Exodus 5–10 first and decide what your child is ready to hear. This story includes slavery, cruel treatment and frightening troubles. The full account includes death; this short edition does not depict injuries or death or tell every event. Pause and welcome questions.

Eli’s everyday mistake is a small practice in listening, not a comparison of equal harms with Pharaoh’s cruelty. Children do not have to fix dangerous or unfair situations: they can ask a trusted adult for help. Listening does not mean agreeing to unsafe requests.

Some Egyptians listened to the hailstorm warning. Avoid labelling a whole people as bad. Do not present present-day illness, storms or disabilities as punishments for being naughty. The grown-up notes also acknowledge the complex theme of Pharaoh’s hardened heart and the events omitted from this retelling.

Bible focus: Exodus 5:1–23; 6:1–8; 8:1–15; 9:13–35; 10:21–29, read in their wider context. This edition does not replace reading the full Bible account.

Eli, Maya and Mum are fictional present-day characters. Ancient clothing and settings are artistic interpretations. Illustrations were created with AI assistance and reviewed for this edition.
