Installment 66 of Finding the Names, Volume One — The Ship Manifests. Transcribed by hand from the National Archives' own scans of the original New Orleans inward manifests: Record Group 36, Microfilm Publication M1895, Roll 8 ("Inward Manifests, 1837–1841," NAID 173898130), images 481–600.

839 entries (828 named, 11 unnamed) on 57 manifests, with the papers running from November 1836 to December 1840.

Inside: the ship Katharine Jackson's 1836 Alexandria manifest of 118 — five of them landed back at Alexandria and never sailed; Hope H. Slatter's 109 numbered entries on the barque Sol Suttis, held under Maryland term-service oaths; the three people banished by a Baltimore court on the brig Uncas, entitled to their freedom after a term of years; the brig Ganniclefft's three girls under the same bargain; Jim, pursued into the Republic of Texas and recovered; a woman entered as "Old Henry"; and the counts that quarrel, printed both ways.

Contents: the book (206 pages, PDF, large print) — About, art by an enslaved creator, the manifests voyage by voyage, the unnamed, an alphabetical name index with image numbers, and honest notes on gaps and disagreements.

Every name is transcribed by hand from the original records. Where a manifest and its certificate disagree, both are printed. Nothing is guessed, and nobody is tidied away. Free — please share, so these names can be found.
