The Arrangement Conference Book
I've spent time on the other side of a sales conversation too — years spent selling software to businesses who didn't think of themselves as needing a "sales pitch" either. What I learned in that world is something I wish someone had told me on my first day running arrangement conferences: selling well and serving well are not opposites. The best salespeople I ever worked alongside were the ones who listened hardest, asked the best questions, and cared the most about whether the person across from them actually got what they needed. The worst ones pushed, rushed, and closed deals that came back to hurt them later. The same is true in this room, except the stakes here are a family's grief, not a company's software budget. This book exists because I don't think funeral directors need to choose between being a caring professional and being someone who runs a financially healthy business. I think most directors were just never shown how those two things fit together — and in the absence of that training, a lot of good people either undersell what they offer out of guilt, or oversell it out of instinct, without meaning to do either
