Explore Animals and Their Habitats with This Hands-On, Cross-Curricular Project-Based Learning Unit! Get your students fully engaged in learning with this interactive, inquiry-based unit that blends science, research, creative writing, drawing, problem-solving, and model-building into one unforgettable experience. Perfect for elementary classrooms and homeschool families, this project allows kids to dive deep into animal research and bring their learning to life by designing a dream habitat for an animal of their choice!

Project Prompt – Let the Inquiry Begin!

Your students have just been hired by the imaginary “X-Animal Company” to design a state-of-the-art zoo habitat. Their task? Become an animal expert and create a small-scale dream habitat model based on real-world data. But first—they’ll go on virtual expeditions, write journal entries, collect facts, research food chains, analyze environments and threats, and craft an informational report... all before building their final model habitat!

Students will:

  • Research animals, ecosystems, predators, prey, and adaptations using books and technology
  • Write engaging journal entries from the perspective of an explorer or zoologist
  • Organize findings into an informational report
  • Apply creativity, engineering, and science knowledge to design and build a model animal habitat

Why Project-Based Learning?

Project-Based Learning (PBL) is a powerful instructional method where students explore a driving question or challenge over time. Unlike traditional projects, PBL places the learning within the process—students discover new knowledge as they work toward a solution. This method promotes critical thinking, creativity, collaboration, and self-directed learning, and helps kids develop real-world skills through meaningful, hands-on tasks.

This resource is the perfect way to integrate science, writing, and art into one cohesive unit that makes a BIG impact. It’s ideal for end-of-year projects, science integration, or anytime you want to do something a little more magical and memorable with your learners.
