Why do I hide?

He does not come to expose you. He comes to find you.

A question was asked. Not by a priest. Not announced from a pulpit. It arrived the way such questions do: quietly, in the middle of something else, when the defences were not fully in place. Why are you here?

I was being received into the Church. The moment I had been moving toward for longer than I had admitted to myself. And the question found me with the speech still forming. I knew what I was supposed to say. I had the words ready. But underneath them was something I had not prepared: the recognition that I had been hiding. Not from the Church. Not from other people. From the voice that had been asking the question for a great deal longer than that evening.
