The Báb Hands-On Connections

Grade 3 • Lesson 12

Short Description

Experience Grade 3 Lesson 12 through a science experiment, object lesson, postcard project, and thaumatrope activity that connect lesson ideas with observation, creativity, discussion, and practical experience.

Hands-On Connections Description

Help students experience the lesson through hands-on activities connected to important events and ideas from Grade 3 Lesson 12.

This resource includes opportunities to explore the Báb's journey by boat through a simple science experiment, consider how individuals can have different roles while working toward a shared purpose, create and deliver a message of kindness or encouragement, and explore the idea of changing hearts through a spinning thaumatrope.

The activities are designed to encourage children to observe, build, create, discuss, reflect, and make connections between the lesson and everyday experiences.

Lesson Focus

Students have opportunities to explore:

  • The different roles and assignments of the Letters of the Living
  • The Báb and Quddús travelling by boat toward Mecca and Medina
  • Remaining calm during difficult circumstances
  • How different individuals can contribute in different ways
  • The idea of messages travelling from one person to another
  • Sharing messages of kindness, hope, encouragement, and joy
  • The change in the hearts of the guards after meeting the Báb
  • How two images can come together to create something new through a thaumatrope

What's Included

Science Connection — Can a Boat Stay Steady in a Storm?

Students build a small boat from aluminium foil, predict how much it can carry, test it with beans, and observe what happens when the water becomes rough. The activity connects the experiment with the story of the Báb and Quddús travelling by boat during rough seas.

Object Lesson — Different Links, One Chain

Students create a paper chain, consider how each link contributes to the whole, and explore the idea that people can have different roles while still working toward a shared purpose.

Creative Connection 1 — A Message to Carry

Students decorate a postcard, write a short message of encouragement, kindness, hope, or joy, and give it to someone who might enjoy receiving it. The activity connects with the Letters of the Living travelling to different places to share the joyful news of the coming of the Qá’im.

Creative Connection 2 — Hearts That Change Thaumatrope

Students choose one of three heart designs, colour and cut the template, fold and glue the two sides together with string, and spin the finished thaumatrope to see the images come together. The activity connects with the change in the guards' hearts after meeting the Báb.

About This Resource

The Hands-On Connections are designed to help students experience the lesson through practical activities that connect lesson ideas with observation, creativity, construction, discussion, and everyday experience.

These activities are optional extensions to the lesson. They can be used in a classroom, children's class, homeschool setting, or small group, with activities adapted according to age, group size, available materials, and the level of adult assistance needed.

The activities encourage children to explore ideas rather than focus on achieving a perfect finished product. Discussion questions and Teacher Connections help bring the activity back to the lesson theme.
