Yarn: DK weight in two colors, approximately 135 yds./125 m of the main color and approximately 20 yds./18 m of the contrast color
Shown in madelinetosh Tosh DK (100% superwash merino; 225 yds./206 m per skein) in Baltic (MC) and Logwood (CC)

Needles: US 6 (4.0 mm), or size needed to obtain gauge

Gauge: 21 stitches and 31 rounds = 4 in./10 cm in stockinette stitch

Size: To fit an average woman's head; approximately 20 in./51 cm in circumference and 8.5 in./21.5 cm from cast-on edge to top of crown

This bottom-up hat starts with a garter stitch brim that is worked flat and features a short-row detail and a one-row buttonhole. After the brim is complete, the work is joined in the round and worked in stockinette through the crown. As written, the hat is slightly slouchy; more length can be added for a slouchier fit.

The short rows used in this pattern are in garter stitch, so while there is wrapping and turning involved, wraps do not need to be picked up on subsequent rows.

As written, the pattern uses two colors of yarn -- approximately 135 yds./125 m of the main color and approximately 20 yds./18 m of the contrast color. To complete the hat, you also will need two stitch markers, a yarn needle (to weave in ends), and one 3/4” (2 cm) button.

To complete this pattern, you need to know how to:
  • work flat and join for working in the round,
  • work short rows using wrap and turn (w&t), and
  • do basic decreases (k2tog).
Detailed instructions are given for a one-row buttonhole.
