TABOO: Relative Clauses Edition | Speaking Game for Teens | 40 Cards
Your students know WHO, WHICH, WHERE and WHOSE… but when it’s time to speak, they either avoid relative clauses completely or always use the same one. 😩
It’s time to get them actually using relative clauses — while playing.
TABOO: Relative Clauses Edition is a fast-paced speaking game designed for teenage English learners. Students describe people, places and things using relative clauses… with one catch:
🚫 They cannot say the 3 taboo words on the card!
Instead of completing another grammar exercise, students have to think, describe, paraphrase and communicate to help their team guess the answer.
And the vocabulary? No boring textbook examples. Students will describe words and names they actually recognise from their world — Taylor Swift, Lamine Yamal, TikTok, Netflix, Spotify, Wi-Fi, memes, air fryers, airports and much more.
🎯 WHAT WILL STUDENTS PRACTISE?
Students will naturally use:
👤 WHO — He/She is someone who…
📦 WHICH — It is something which…
📍 WHERE — It is a place where…
🔑 WHOSE — He/She is someone whose…
At the same time, they’ll develop:
✨ Speaking fluency
✨ Vocabulary recall
✨ Paraphrasing skills
✨ Circumlocution — explaining a word when they don’t know/can’t use it
✨ Spontaneous grammar production
✨ Confidence speaking English
✨ Quick thinking and communication
🎮 HOW DOES IT WORK?
One student picks a card and describes the target word using relative clauses.
But they cannot use the 3 forbidden words printed on the card.
Their teammates listen and try to guess before time runs out.
Correct guess = 1 point! 🏆
Then change players and keep going.
Every card also includes a NEED HELP? section with visual sentence starters for WHO, WHICH, WHERE and WHOSE, giving students support when they need it without giving them the answer.
