Still Family After Permanency: Guardianship and Adoption Through the Teen Years

A course for guardians and adoptive families on staying close to a child after the case closes, through the teen years and into adulthood. A 2-hour training with a certificate.

What this course is

This is the sixth course in the Family Who Stepped In series. It's for guardians and adoptive parents of any race whose case is already closed. You might have adopted a child from care, become a legal guardian or taken on a relative's child for good. It fits families with a child heading into the teen years, families in the middle of them and families with a young adult who just moved out. If the caseworker visits ended a while ago and your child's questions didn't, this course was written for you.

What you'll be able to do

  • Spot the ways old questions and old losses can come back after the court case is over.
  • Talk with a teen about who they are and where they come from in plain and truthful words.
  • Plan for birth family contact, searching and social media with safety and your teen's feelings in mind.
  • Stay close to a teen who is pushing the family away, without giving up on them.
  • Find post-adoption and post-guardianship help early, and stay family to your child into adulthood.

How the certificate works

  1. Take the opening quiz as a warm-up. It doesn't count toward your certificate.
  2. Work through the six lessons in order. Each one comes with a printable page you can fill in and keep.
  3. Type your plan right into the course, one line at a time. Each line comes with an example to help you.
  4. Pass the final quiz with at least 8 out of 10. You can retake it as many times as you need.
  5. Answer a short evaluation, and your certificate unlocks for 2 training hours.

Please check with your licensing worker or agency about how many hours they accept for self-paced training.

For agencies
