A practical rhythm method that teaches rhythm and bow control together.

Rhythm exercises are often written as if every instrument works the same way. For string players, that's not quite true. A rhythm isn't just something you count — you also have to figure out how that rhythm works with your bow.

This 10-lesson packet connects the two.

Students gradually work from basic quarter-note rhythms to mixed rhythms and syncopation, while also learning how to use their bow more deliberately.

Each lesson follows the same 3 steps

1. Count & Clap

Start away from the instrument. Students count and clap the rhythm before worrying about playing it.

2. Open String Practice

Play the rhythm on an open string. This lets students focus on the bow — including bow changes, string crossings, and keeping the rhythm steady — without having to think about the left hand.

3. Rhythm Mastery

Put the rhythm into a musical line and apply what they've practiced.

Then, on the second page, students get space to write their own rhythms and musical ideas using the concept from that lesson.

The 10-lesson progression

Lessons 1–2: Quarter Notes & Quarter Rests

Lesson 3: Whole & Half Notes and Rests

Lesson 4: Mixed Fundamental Values

Lessons 5–6: Eighth Notes & Subdivisions

Lessons 7–8: Sixteenth Notes & Permutations

Lessons 9–10: Mixed Note Values & Rhythmic Independence

Built specifically with string players in mind

As the rhythms become more complicated, the lessons also address some of the physical challenges that come with playing them on a string instrument:

  • Where to use the bow for different rhythmic values
  • How bow speed affects longer and shorter notes
  • When to retake the bow
  • How to coordinate bow changes with the rhythm
  • How to keep the bow aligned with the musical pulse
