The Wound and the Want EN
The Wound & the Want | A Workbook for the Inner Life of a Character
A character is more than what they say. Discover what they want, what they fear, what they hide and what they truly need.
The Wound & the Want is a structured character-development workbook for actors who want to build a more specific and believable inner life for their roles — and translate that understanding into playable choices on camera or on stage.
The workbook explores six connected layers of character psychology and motivation:
- Want: What the character consciously pursues.
- Fear: The outcome they will do almost anything to avoid.
- Secret: What they knowingly hide from others.
- Lie: The false belief that shapes how they see themselves or the world.
- Wound: An imagined formative event that helped create that belief.
- Need: What the character truly requires, often in conflict with what they want.
Inside the workbook, you will find:
- Guided questions for each of the six layers.
- A continuous fictional example character, Theo, showing how the layers connect.
- Solo exercises such as The Verb Test, The Avoidance Walk, The Pocket and The Unsent Letter.
- Tools for turning analysis into inner monologue, physical choices, subtext and scene work.
- A complete example scene with a worked character analysis.
- A closing ritual to help you separate the character’s imagined experience from your own after deep work.
An important principle: This is a creative acting tool, not therapy. The exercises are built on script analysis, observation and imagination. You are never required to use or disclose your own painful experiences.
Who is it for?
Actors preparing complex roles, audition scenes or emotionally layered characters who want to go deeper than surface-level interpretation.
