"The Town Who Had Enough" (Advance Creative Writing)

This advanced creative writing unit transforms your classroom into a professional publishing house where students collaboratively create a multi-perspective novel inspired by one of the most controversial true crime cases in American history: the 1981 killing of Ken Rex McElroy in Skidmore, Missouri—a case where 30–46 witnesses saw a man shot in broad daylight, yet no one spoke, and no one was ever charged. Drawing also from Christos Tsiolkas's novel The Slap—which explores how a single event fractures a community through multiple perspectives—students will work together to create a shared small town, develop its "town bully," and individually write chapters from different residents' perspectives, both before and after the killing. The unit emphasizes professional collaboration, moral complexity, small-town psychology, unreliable narration, and the ethical questions surrounding vigilante justice.
