Giro Cowl

Sometimes the thing you most need in your wardrobe is the simplest of accessories, the one that goes with everything. Something that can be as neutral or as colourfully uplifting as you want.

Sometimes as a knitter the thing you most need on your needs is also the simplest of patterns that allow the gentle meditative repetition of stitch after stitch. Nothing to count, nothing to remember, just plain knitting that enables you to relax and your yarn to shine.

This is what the Giro cowl offers. It started from the really practical place of needing a light, cosy hiking cowl and expanded into something much more luxurious.

The pattern offers 3 sizes as shown in the schematic (please see pictures) But also includes information and advice for customising. The large size doubles as a snood with is just perfect if you live in colder climes.

It also provides full written instructions for the techniques used - The Crochet provisional cast on and the stocking stitch graft, although you could always simply cast on, cast off and sew the ends together.

This is perfect for lace leftovers and is knit at a gauge where it grows nice and quickly. It will probably grow even quicker if you add a stripe sequence, again the pattern discusses this and includes more info. the other great thing about this pattern is that you can pretty much knit until your yarn runs out.

Sizes 

Small - 18 cm x 66 cm / 7 x 26 1/2 inches

Medium - 33 cm x 72 cm / 13 x 29 inches

Large - 43 cm x 78 cm / 17 x 31 inches

Yarn

Any Laceweight yarn approx. 860m/940yds per 100g.

The samples were worked with Malabrigo Laceweight in a range of colours.

Small - 50g (430m/470yds) of yarn

Medium - 100g (860m/940yds) of yarn

Large – 150g (860m/940yds) of yarn

The small used approx 380m, the medium -760m and the large 1110m of Malabrigo lace.

Gauge

28 sts x 47 rows = 10 x 10 cm / 4 x 4 inches in stocking stitch worked in the round, before blocking.

25 sts x 44 rows = 10 x 10 cm / 4 x 4 inches in stocking stitch worked in the round, after blocking.

Needles & Materials

3.25mm (US3) circular needle of appropriate length for your chosen finished measurements, or needles required to obtain gauge.

A second needle the same size to accommodate the stitches from the provisional cast on in order to graft the two ends together. 

Waste yarn for provisional cast on.

3.25mm Crochet hook, or the same size as your needles - for provisional cast on.
