Climb or Crash | 15-Minute Mixed Tenses Team Game | No-Prep Grammar Review
You have 15 minutes left… now what?
You’ve finished your lesson a little earlier than expected. There are 10–15 minutes left, but you don’t want to start something new… and handing out another grammar worksheet isn’t exactly going to spark excitement.
That’s exactly what Climb or Crash is for.
A quick, no-prep team challenge designed to review mixed verb tenses, get students talking about grammar, and make those last minutes of class actually count.
Simply project the presentation, put students into teams, and give each team a Climb Tracker.
🏔️ 7 questions. 7 levels. How high will they dare to climb?
Students work in teams to answer 7 questions of increasing difficulty.
They have just 10 seconds per question to discuss the sentence, choose the correct tense and record their answer on their Climb Tracker.
The catch?
They don’t find out if they’re right yet.
Once all 7 questions have been completed, the answers are revealed one by one.
After each correct answer, teams have a decision to make:
💰 BANK — Keep the points they’ve earned and stop climbing.
🏔️ CLIMB — Risk their points and move on to the next level.
But if they choose to climb and their next answer is wrong…
💥 CRASH! — They lose their points.
The higher they climb, the harder the questions become — and the more points are at stake, from 5 all the way to 100.
🤝 Why play in teams?
Because the goal isn’t simply to squeeze in seven more grammar questions before the bell rings.
Working in teams gets students talking about grammar instead of just completing grammar.
They have to compare ideas, explain their reasoning, listen to their teammates and agree on one final answer:
“I think it’s Past Perfect because this happened first.”
“But look at ‘while’…”
“Are we sure enough to climb?”
This makes grammar review more collaborative and gives students who may be reluctant to answer in front of the whole class a lower-pressure way to participate.
And because each team has to decide whether to BANK or CLIMB, getting the grammar right is only part of the challenge.
They also need to decide how confident they are in their answers and how much they’re willing to risk.
✏️ Grammar included
Students review:
Present Simple · Present Continuous · Present Perfect · Past Simple · Past Continuous · Past Perfect
The questions become progressively more challenging. Early levels help students build confidence, while later levels require them to interpret context, distinguish between similar tenses and work with more than one tense in the same sentence.
📦 What’s included?
You’ll receive a ready-to-project classroom presentation featuring the game instructions, 7 progressively challenging questions, points and levels, answer reveals and BANK or CLIMB decision moments.
You’ll also get a printable Climb Tracker for teams to record their answers, decisions and points as they play.
